ChatGPT
The general assistant most solo founders already know — now with an agent mode that does multi-step work, not just answers
The safest first paid AI subscription for a solo founder — the catch is usage caps, so heavy agent users get pushed toward $100/month Pro.
What ChatGPT is — in our words
For a solo founder, ChatGPT is the default second brain: you open it to think through a pricing change, draft a difficult email, summarise a long contract, turn rough notes into a proposal, or plan the week. What has changed the proposition is the agentic layer. ChatGPT Work can take a brief, go away and work across your files and connected apps, and come back with a finished document, spreadsheet or slide deck rather than a chat answer you still have to assemble yourself. Codex, included in the paid plans, handles the technical jobs a non-technical founder would otherwise pay for: fixing a landing page, writing a small script to clean a customer list, or automating a repetitive file task. Scheduled tasks let you set up recurring work — a Monday morning brief, a weekly competitor check, a monthly numbers summary — that runs without you remembering to ask. Custom GPTs let you bottle your own instructions, tone and reference files into a reusable assistant for, say, support replies or listing descriptions. Projects keep a client's or product's context in one place, and memory means you stop re-explaining your business every session. The honest limits are usage caps that bite hardest on the cheaper tiers, agent runs that still need checking before anything leaves the building, and the fact that it is a generalist: it will draft your support replies, but it is not a helpdesk, and it will plan a campaign, but it will not run your inbox end to end without supervision.
What it does end-to-end
- Runs multi-step agent tasks in ChatGPT Work and returns finished documents, sheets and decks
- Scheduled tasks for recurring briefs, checks and summaries
- Custom GPTs that package your instructions, tone and files for repeat jobs
- Deep research reports with sources for market, competitor and supplier questions
- Codex for small coding and automation jobs a non-developer would otherwise outsource
What it does NOT do
- Not a customer-support helpdesk — no shared inbox, ticketing or SLAs
- Does not send, publish or buy anything consequential without you reviewing it
- Usage limits on Free, Go and Plus can interrupt long agent runs
- No built-in bookkeeping, invoicing or phone answering
Pricing — checked 2026-11-04
Free tier, a cheap Go tier, and Plus at $20/month as the realistic solo plan; Pro tiers at $100–$500/month are for very heavy agent and coding use.
| Plan | Published price |
|---|---|
| Free | $0/month |
| Go | $8/month |
| Plus | $20/month |
| Pro | From $100/month |
Integrations we verified: Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, Slack, GitHub, Notion, Dropbox
Pros — our take
- Widest range of jobs in one subscription — writing, research, files, code and scheduled agent work
- Plus at $20/month is easy to justify if you use it daily
- Free tier is genuinely usable for testing the agent features
Cons — our take
- Usage caps are shared and can stop a long Work or Codex session mid-flow
- Agent output still needs a human check before it goes to customers
- Go and Free may include ads, and Go prices vary by country
